In Memoriam
Duane P. "Dewey" Schumacher1934-2008
Tribute
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Duane P. “Dewey” Schumacher, a partner with DeWitt Ross & Stevens in Madison, on April 19, 2008. Dewey was 73 and passed away after a long illness with his family by his side. Dewey had more than 47 years of legal experience, with a focus in estate planning, probate, real estate and business law. His clients included individuals, banks, realtors and brokers, construction companies, and a wide variety of businesses. Dewey graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a degree in Political Science. He then went on to enlist in the army for two years and served in the Korean War. After active duty, he returned to Madison to get his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1961. He then joined the DeWitt Ross & Stevens Law Firm in 1961. Long associated with the law firm's predecessors, Dewey at one time was one of the named partners. He enjoyed his time consumed by his law practice, his homes in Wisconsin and Florida, and his favorite ice sport, curling. He had been an active member of the Madison Curling Club for more than 25 years. Dewey established his notable career early. He was involved in a landmark "slum lord" case in which the state supreme court ruled on landlord responsibilities to maintain inhabitable premises. Due to his work, Dewey has been recognized as a Top Lawyer by Madison Magazine. Dewey embraced life and inspired others with his bright smile and infectious laugh. He was dear to those who knew and loved him. Dewey leaves his loving wife Cindy, daughters, Amy (BJ) Fitchburg and Beth (Todd) Wunderlin of Cottage Grove; son, Scott (Jessica) of Fitchburg; grandchildren, Caleb, Trevor, Jack, Ellie and Sydney. All memorials and contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave, Suite 7000, El Segundo, CA 90245, www.pancan.org or to the Madison Curling Club, 4802 Marsh Road, McFarland, WI 53558. |
