Brian R. Purtell

Brian Purtell, an attorney at the Madison Office, focuses his practice on representing and advising health care providers. He has extensive experience in the areas of long-term health care law, employment matters specific to health care, licensing, HIPAA, provider contracting, transactions, litigation, and bioethical issues. He is recognized as a state and national expert in the field of long-term care, and is regularly asked to serve in an advisory capacity to shape health care policy and laws.

Having years of experience in the regulatory minefield that health care providers face, Mr. Purtell applies his knowledge and connections to assist providers in navigating regulatory labyrinths in responding to enforcement actions, employment matters, business transactions, or litigation. Clients appreciate his passionate advocacy on their behalf while remaining mindful of the impact on the patients/residents they serve. In addition to his work on behalf of his provider clients, Mr. Purtell serves as general counsel for the Wisconsin Health Care Association and the Wisconsin Occupational Therapy Association.

Mr. Purtell has been active in the State Bar of Wisconsin. He is a member of the Health Law Section and served several terms on the Health Law Section Board, including a term as chairperson in 2005. For a time, Mr. Purtell also served as chairperson of the health care committee with Lexwork International. Lexwork is comprised of 37 mid-sized law firms in the North America, South America and Europe. Network members assist each other with knowledge about local laws, regulations and customs.

Mr. Purtell is a frequent presenter to providers on a range of legal and regulatory issues, and has authored numerous articles and publications in the health law field. In particular, Mr. Purtell received many notes of appreciation for his article in defense of long-term care providers which was published in Wisconsin Lawyer magazine.
