Louis B. Butler Jr., Appellate Litigator and Former Supreme Court Justice Joins DeWitt

DeWitt today announced Louis B. Butler joined the firm in its Brookfield office.

“We are tremendously honored Louis has decided to join our firm. He has a brilliant legal mind and his appellate and litigation experience is a tremendous asset to our firm,” said President and Managing Partner Bradley C. Fulton. Many recall Butler for being the first African American to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The decisions which he participated in had a great impact on Wisconsin’s legal landscape.

Butler was the first Public Defender in Wisconsin’s history to argue before the United States Supreme Court in McCoy v. Wisconsin Court of Appeals, 486 U.S. 429 (1988) and was nominated by President Barack Obama to be a United States District Court Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin. He previously served as a public defender, municipal and state court judge and more recently practiced with a local law firm, where he helped steer its appellate practice group.

Since his time on the bench Butler has focused his private practice on providing clients with advice in several areas of the law, to include litigation, construction litigation, environmental issues and appellate matters. Butler has argued before the United States Supreme Court and is a permanent member of the faculty of the national Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, where judges take continuing judicial education classes.

He earned his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his B.A. from Lawrence University, where he also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities. Butler is the recipient of numerous awards, to include the Thomas G. Cannon Equal Justice Award, William M. Coffey Memorial Award, NAACP Foot Soldiers’ Award, Outstanding Citizen’s Award, Trail Blazer Award, 2014 Leader in the Law Award from the Wisconsin Law Journal and the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the American Federation of Teachers 2012. He is admitted to practice in Wisconsin and Illinois. He is a member of the Fellows of Wisconsin Law Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Law Foundation, the Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the Wisconsin Law Foundation, a member of the Board of Trustees for Lawrence University and a member of the Board of Directors for the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee.
